No, none of these birds are Ichabod Crane. Now I just love the new show Sleepy Hollow, but not even the image of the compelling Tom Mison who plays the role can distract me from these birds when they appear in front of me.

I don’t know if you’ve ever come across the cranes while running, but they can be very intimidating. They stare you down, daring you to run them off the road. I just wish them a good morning and give them a wide berth! But while running in Connecticut I discovered a bigger avian threat. At least to me. Dum, dum dum. Canadian geese.
I knew they were somewhere nearby since I saw, um, evidence of them on the sidewalk. I hurried past the little pond to my right and continued up the hill, but by the time I ran back down they’d assembled! A whole bunch–gaggle?–of them waddled menacingly toward me as I neared the pond. Eek!
Thankfully I was running downhill at that point and zoomed past them. Whew. They have more bulk than the spindly cranes in Florida. And from reputation can be pretty mean. Hmm. Maybe they’re the reason I had a personal pace record that morning, lol.
Bird training? Maybe there’s something there. But to be on the safe side, I’ll try to be sharp of eye and fleet of foot.
At least until I pass them!
